  • Who was that lady I saw you with last night?

That was no lady, I was in drag. (Badoom kwash).

Woe, woe to the captive minions of the industrial West. And me, so young.

Next Tuesday I begin a temporary, low-paying job assembling prototype electric meters in a lab. There are 60 or so to build at a minimum rate of 5 per week. The hourly pay is less than that earned by a skilled auto mechanic, but hey, it's a traditional summer job! I will be working in Jackson, Michigan and living with my brother in E. Lansing. Thirty-five miles to work, one way. I calculate that I will be working one hour per day just to pay for the commuting fuel. That is not figuring the 200 miles between here and there. I will not come home every weekend.

Farewell, kind friends. The wilderness beckons, and I go.

  • I just said to myself, "Self," I said, "where does one go to get a good prototype electric meters these days?" Now I know.

I put my first hours in at that part time jobbie with the remodeling company this morning. They said they'll pay me in prototype electric meters. Good ones I hope.

  • There seems to be trouble in Blogland lately. This thread main posting took over a day to show up, after I tried for two hours to get it posted. I kept getting "This posting is taking longer than expected. Click here to continue." It also took 4 days for a recent comment to be posted to a previous thread. I also just tried to post a comment to this thread as well, and got an error message that the connection had been reset. The comment seems to be lost. Anyone else seeing problems?

  • I occasionally see this happen too, though not with the severity that you report.

The general feeling among blog techies seems to be that Blogger development/maintenance has slipped since Google bought it. It's sort of taken a back seat to the myriad other projects Google works on. I think this is true to some extent. The only solution for us would be to abandon Blogger in favor of another "stand alone" solution, one completely self contained on our site. I posted about this option some time ago. he problem with it, outside of a major effort on my part to get it up and running, is that all users would have to re-register themselves under the new system. We already have so few users who post and I'm wondering if having to re-register and learn a new posting system would shrink that group even further. If enough people chime in and say they want this to happen I'll do it. I just don't want to see my time involvement in a project like that lessen the active user count and therefore be counterproductive in the end.

  • It's not crippling at this point, just irritating. I agree with you that the low-traffic nature of our site doesn't warrant a lot of work right now.

BTW - The Michigan job requires a bunch of paperwork including Dept of Homeland Security certification of my eligibility to work in the USA and drug testing. No more peeing in the cup these days. They take hair follicles. I am concerned with DNA data-basing as the ultimate form of identity theft. Kind of like going to the doctor for a head cold and winding up with your fingerprints in the FBI files, "just in case". My decision becomes - "Is it worth compromising my privacy for a 15-week temporary low-paying job?" I just hate the idea of feeding the machine on any level.

  • How much privacy do you think have anyway? And what do you do that requires that much privacy? Hell we don't even bother with the expense of curtains. Anyone who wants to spend their time peeking in my windows is more pitiable than frightening. And who ever wants to steal my identity is welcome to it as long as I can swipe a better one to replace it.

  • I don't care about the idly curious, or the prurient peeper. I am concerned with the sociopathic egoist who does horrible things out of a sense of godlike entitlement and who has no sense of connectedness or consequence. Wait a minute! I am describing our current slate of political office-holders!
